How do you read a Stripe payout and balance report?

Last reviewed 2026-07-02

A Stripe payout report breaks a deposit into its parts: gross charges, refunds, disputes, processing fees, adjustments, and reserves, netting to what lands in your bank. The balance report ties each of those to the underlying transactions. To read them for errors, check the effective fee rate, confirm refunds reversed their fees, and match the net to the deposit.

At a glance
  • A payout is gross charges minus refunds, disputes, fees, and reserves.
  • The balance report links each line to its underlying charge or transfer.
  • Check the effective fee rate against your contracted pricing.
  • The payout's net should equal the deposit in your bank; if not, investigate.

What the payout report contains

Gross volume for the period, refunds, disputes and chargebacks, processing fees, any adjustments, reserves or holds withheld, and the net payout. Each line moves the deposit up or down from gross to net.

Reading it for errors

Recompute the effective fee rate and compare it to your contracted pricing, verify that each refund reversed its original fee, confirm disputes you won were credited back, and check that reserves were released on schedule.

Tying it to the bank and your books

The payout's net should equal the deposit that landed in your account, and the underlying charges should match what your billing system recorded. A gap on either side is a short or missing amount to chase, or a failed charge your books still count as revenue.

Common questions

What is a reserve or hold?

A portion of your funds Stripe withholds against risk, meant to be released later. Reserves that are never released are recoverable.

Why reconcile the balance report, not just the payout total?

The payout total nets thousands of transactions into one number. The balance report is where you can tie each fee, refund, and charge to its source and catch the individual errors the total hides.

Does this apply to Stripe Connect / marketplaces?

Yes. Connect adds transfers to and from connected accounts; the same read applies, with the extra step of tying each transfer to what was owed to that party.
